The Bowl Mitt

Of all of the things I sew for the kitchen, bowl mitts are my absolute favorite. Have you ever burned your fingers trying to grab a dish from the microwave after reheating leftovers? Or spilled the contents of your dish while (awkwardly) attempting to remove it with an oven mitt? Me too! That was the first of many reasons why, when I saw these bowl mitts (also called “soup bowl cozies”), I HAD to have them.

While these mitts are awesome for heating up soup/leftovers, they’re also great for holding bowls of ice cream and/or bringing dishes to a party. They are made of 100% cotton, making them microwave-safe. They’re also machine washable!

I started sewing these as complete beginner. You’ll need a sewing machine, 100% cotton thread, 100% cotton fabric, and 100% cotton batting (I use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap – find yours here). I found several online tutorials when I first started looking for a pattern, and this free pattern from Happy Hour Stitches was the best/easiest to follow for me. Follow the link to view the tutorial and grab the pattern so you can whip up some of these yourself!

Interested in some bowl mitts of your own but not a sewist? I’d be happy to make one (or several) for you! Send me a message at orders@bluebugboutique.com to get started.

Sew cute! I might have to take you up on the made to order offer – last time I sewed was in junior high!

These are adorable. I like the patterns you chose too. I think that part is so important. I’ve seen ones other people have made and I was just turned off by the whole idea… but in retrospect I think it was the color choice and prints they used. I see your photos and I now I feel like I NEED these in my life. Lol.

Thank you, Jenny! I definitely agree that pattern/color choice can make a huge difference. I always consider taste/style and favorite colors when picking out fabrics for these, but generally try to stick to neutrals so that they can easily be incorporated into decor. Aside from that, I’d argue that you DO need these in your life – they’re such a great thing to have!

I wish I knew how to sew better! This is a fantastic idea 🙂

Thanks, Megan! One of the best things about this project is that it’s really quite straightforward – even a beginner sewist can do them!
