In a world where humans no longer believe in mythical creatures and magic, two ancient races hide in the shadows, locked in a constant struggle for power. The Nyiathans live to protect the humans, while the Sieks, in turn, plot their demise.
Kaida has always been reckless, willing to take chances and risks that are frowned upon by her fellow Nyiathans. When one of her escapades leads her Guard to take in a human named Sam, a young man who was recently rendered homeless after his girlfriend kicked him out on the street, it doesn’t take long for the Guard to figure out that Sam is being hunted by the Sieks. As punishment for her irresponsibility, Kaida is assigned to protect Sam, a task that requires her to remain in her human form at all times. The closer she gets to Sam, the more concerned she becomes – not only for him, but for the fate of the human race as a whole.
As Kaida and the Nyiathan Guard soon realize, the world around them is changing. A revolution is stirring among the enemy ranks, and the Sieks are becoming more and more ruthless. The Nyiathans must do everything they can to stop them from succeeding in their mission to overthrow their leader – and from starting the war that could end them all.
